Loft Apartment
PDX, OR 2025
Design Notes: This project was especially meaningful, as it truly created important life change for our clients! As a multigenerational home, aging parents were still climbing a flight of stairs every night to their upstairs bedroom, with the only fully-functional bathroom on the main floor. Their adult daughter’s bedroom was on the main floor, but to create ease for her parents, she shared the room so they could nap there during the day and keep their clothes and belongings on the main floor, meaning she didn’t have her own independent space. The main floor bedroom still had children’s wallpaper from the 70’s & shag carpet covering the gorgeous hardwoods, and the multi-room 2nd floor was primarily used for storage and sleeping.
Enter The Overall Designers! We pulled out that shag carpet and gave the primary bedroom walls a fresh start before relocating mom & dad and all their belongings downstairs. We were delighted to limit their need for daily stair-climbing, as that is a critical safety element of designing for folks aging in place. We then helped them sort & empty a lifetime of storage from the 2nd floor and created a lovely loft apartment to give our client the best 40th birthday gift ever - her own autonomous space! We repaired the semi-functional upstairs bathroom so she had her own full bath, designed a gorgeous walk-in closet (she had never had a closet to herself!), gave her a peaceful bedroom, and a multi-purpose living/office/fitness space in the main area. Now when she works from home, she doesn’t have to set up at the kitchen table, and she can host friends in her loft! Most importantly, everyone in the home now has their own beautiful space that fits their individual needs! We were so honored to help & couldn’t be happier for them!
