Family Rec Room

PDX, OR 2025

Design Notes: New house, new start. As we all know, any big purchase can overwhelming…especially when it’s an historic home with an unfinished basement. For this new home owner, the goal for the basement space was to have a fun relaxing hang-out spot with a projector and screen, a ping pong table, dart board, and crafting area for his kids. The first task was to rip out a wall’s worth of old wood built-in cupboards to free up more space. Building a feature wall to divide the space came next, then painting the walls and floors. After that, the TODS got to work using old and new items the owner already had. We got crafty as we accessorized the space: painting an old rotary phone turquoise and displaying an adorable outgrown kid-sized Adidas shoe. With the wood from the built-ins, we created a mix-matched wood wall above the craft area, along with trimming the windows and adding slats up the stairs. The space got fun pops of color with Hollywood-themed wallpaper, playful artwork, and bright throw pillows. It evolved into a space where chill meets recreation for a reimagined basement that the family now enjoys!
